Algeria overflight permits
Algeria covers one of the largest FIRs in Africa and sits on many routes between Europe and West Africa. Here is what an overflight permit requires, and which aircraft cannot enter its airspace at all.
- Authority
- DGACM (Ministry of Transport)
- FIR
- Algiers (DAAA)
- Private flights
- Permit required
- Closed to
- UAE- and Morocco-registered aircraft
01Airspace restrictions in 2026
From 11 September 2026, Algeria closed its airspace to all UAE-registered civil and military aircraft, for arrivals, departures and overflight. Commercial flights between the UAE and Algiers were reported exempt until the end of 2026, and no end date has been set for the closure. Algeria has been closed to Moroccan aircraft since 2021.
If your aircraft is registered in either country, plan the route around the Algiers FIR. We can propose alternatives over Tunisia, Libya or the Mediterranean, depending on the destination.
02Who needs a permit and who issues it
Permits are issued by the Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile et de la Météorologie (DGACM), part of the Ministry of Transport. Private flights are included: an Algerian NOTAM made private flights by both Algerian and foreign aircraft subject to authorisation to overfly or land, and charter, cargo and other non-scheduled flights also need a permit.
03Lead time and validity
The official lead time has been reported as 72 hours. Complete requests from operators with no unpaid navigation charges can be cleared faster, and current handler quotes are 24 to 48 working hours. Outstanding navigation charges can hold a request up, so settle them before filing.
A permit is typically valid for around 72 hours from the approved time.
04Information for an Algeria overflight request
Provide:
- Aircraft registration, type and call sign
- Operator details
- Schedule in UTC and routing with FIR entry and exit points
- Purpose of flight, with passenger or cargo details
05How we handle Algerian permits
Send us the aircraft, routing and schedule. Our OCC checks the current Algerian requirements for your flight type, prepares the request, files it and follows it up until the permit number is issued. We then pass it to the crew and the flight plan, and revise it if the schedule moves.
We arrange the permits for the rest of the routing in the same trip file, with overflight permits for the countries you cross and landing permits at your destination.
06Frequently asked questions
Can UAE-registered aircraft overfly Algeria?
No. Since 11 September 2026, Algeria has closed its airspace to all UAE-registered aircraft, and no end date has been announced.
Do private flights need an Algeria overflight permit?
Yes. Private flights by foreign aircraft need authorisation to overfly or land, as do charter and cargo flights.
How long does an Algeria overflight permit take?
The official lead time has been reported as 72 hours; complete requests are often cleared in 24 to 48 working hours. Unpaid navigation charges can delay a request.
Permit rules, lead times and fees change, sometimes at short notice through NOTAM or AIP supplement. This page is a general guide, not operational advice: our OCC confirms the current requirements for every request before you fly.
Requirements last reviewed November 4, 2026.
