Egypt overflight permits

The Cairo FIR sits on the main routes between Europe, the Gulf and East Africa. Here is what the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority needs for an overflight, and how much more a landing permit asks for.

01Who issues Egyptian permits

The Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) issues overflight and landing permits for non-scheduled flights, including private, charter, cargo, technical landings and ambulance flights. Private and charter flights need a permit for both overflight and landing.

02Lead time, weekends and validity

Published guidance has given an official lead time of four business days for private and charter permits, but routine overflights are often approved within 24 to 48 hours, and medevac requests can be expedited. The ECAA does not work on Friday or Saturday, so file weekend flights by Thursday. Routings crossing Sinai at lower levels can take longer to clear.

An Egyptian permit is generally valid only for the scheduled (UTC) date. If the flight slips past midnight UTC, request a revision.

03Overflight vs landing permits in Egypt

An overflight request needs the basic aircraft, captain, people-on-board and itinerary details. A landing permit takes longer and needs full crew and passenger data: full name, date of birth, nationality, and passport number and expiry. Approval can depend on passenger nationality and on the stated purpose of the trip, so state it exactly. Egyptian nationals travelling on general aviation aircraft need ECAA approval and must be listed in the initial request.

04Documents for an Egypt permit

Have these ready:

  • AOC, or the registration certificate for private flights
  • Insurance certificate including war-risk cover
  • Noise certificate
  • Routing with Cairo FIR entry and exit points and times in UTC
  • Crew and passenger passport details (landing permits)

05How we handle Egyptian permits

Send us the aircraft, routing and schedule. Our OCC checks the current Egyptian requirements for your flight type, prepares the request, files it and follows it up until the permit number is issued. We then pass it to the crew and the flight plan, and revise it if the schedule moves.

We arrange the permits for the rest of the routing in the same trip file, with overflight permits for the countries you cross and landing permits at your destination.

06Frequently asked questions

What lead time does an Egypt overflight permit need?

Published guidance gives up to four business days. Routine overflights are often approved within 24 to 48 hours. Allow for the ECAA's Friday–Saturday weekend.

What is the difference between an Egypt overflight and landing permit?

An overflight needs basic aircraft and itinerary details. A landing permit needs full passport details for crew and passengers, and ECAA approval for any Egyptian nationals on board.

How long is an Egyptian permit valid?

Generally only for the scheduled UTC date. Revise it if the schedule slips.

Permit rules, lead times and fees change, sometimes at short notice through NOTAM or AIP supplement. This page is a general guide, not operational advice: our OCC confirms the current requirements for every request before you fly.

Requirements last reviewed November 4, 2026.
